Founded in January 2011, Social Finance, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing capital to drive social progress. Social Finance is motivated by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, and that social impact financing can play a catalytic role in creating these opportunities. Core to its work is the development of Pay for Success (PFS) financing.
Social Finance is a PFS project intermediary—one of the first in the United States—and focuses on all aspects of the PFS process to ensure successful deals and create momentum for a sustainable market for social outcomes. It partners with governments, nonprofits, foundations, impact investors, and financial institutions to explore, create, and manage innovative financing solutions to improve social outcomes. Social Finance’s activities include:
- Advisory Services. Social Finance partners with governments and foundations to assess promising programs that could benefit from PFS financing.
- Social Investment. Social Finance develops PFS projects that are designed to improve social outcomes for people in need and generate financial returns to investors. It mobilizes capital to support PFS projects and put capital to work in service of society, providing nonprofits that operate successful programs with access to flexible, upfront funds so that they may achieve scale and reach many more people.
- Active Performance Management. Social Finance works to ensure its projects stay on track and drive positive results for communities in need. Its team strives to facilitate improved quality of life and lasting, positive change for program participants.
- Field Building and Market Education. Through research, advocacy, and publications, Social Finance supports the development of the PFS market and the broader impact investment movement.
Social Finance collaborates closely with its sister organizations, Social Finance UK—the pioneer behind the world's first Social Impact Bond that was launched in 2010—and Social Finance Israel, as part of the Social Finance Global Network. Together, the Global Network strives to advance innovative financing solutions to tackle social issues worldwide and represents the largest pool of PFS expertise globally.
